Golden Latte
Hi everyone,
One of my new favorite drinks I’ve discovered recently is called a Golden Latte. It’s a blend of turmeric and other spices, milk of your choice, sweetener, and vanilla extract. I love a hot beverage especially during the colder months and when I’m staying home due to the pandemic. This drink is perfect if you don’t love sugar-bomb or cloyingly sweet drinks. The honey in the latte supplements the turmeric, letting the turmeric shine. The ginger and cinnamon add a complementary warmth while the vanilla rounds everything out.
Never had turmeric? This recipe calls for ground turmeric as the flavor is more concentrated compared to fresh. Turmeric is an eye-catching yellowish orange color. It has a dryness and bitter quality with a bit of earthiness. If you like salads with bitter components (like endive or radicchio), the slight bitterness of coffee, or the hoppiness of IPAs, then a Golden Latte may be up your alley. The Golden Latte is a winner in the presentation department as the turmeric gives the drink a vibrant yellow color.
The recipe for this latte was originally published here. I’ve adapted the proportions to yield 1-(16 oz) beverage. The recipe can easily be scaled (one of my favorite math terms) for more or less drinks. Additionally, you can adapt the yield of 1 drink to be 8 oz, 12 oz, 16 oz, etc. I hope you enjoy
Cozy Golden Latte
Yields: 1 (16 oz) drink
16 oz milk ( I recommend 1%)
1 TBSP honey
1/2 tsp ground turmeric
1/2 tsp ground ginger
1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp vanilla
1. In a small saucepan, begin to heat milk, honey, and spices over medium heat.
2. Whisk mixture constantly until milk is just below scalded (the milk should be steaming but NOT bubbling)
3. Once steamy, and just below a simmer, remove saucepan from heat. Whisk in vanilla.
4. Pour into your favorite mug and enjoy!
Want to make the recipe your own? Here are some suggestions!
* Swap out 1% milk for 2%, whole, or your favorite plant based milk.
* Substitute maple syrup, brown sugar, or granulated sugar for the honey.
* Switch the amounts of ginger and cinnamon called for in the recipe. Try 1/2 tsp cinnamon and 1/4 tsp ginger.
* Simmer your favorite ground or whole spices as you heat the drink over the stove. If you use whole spices make sure to strain them before serving.
I hope you consider making this Golden Latte. The drink is slightly creamy, a bit bitter, and tamed by the honey and vanilla. The beverage can be made within 5-10 minutes and is easily scalable. I hope you enjoy.
Stay warm and stay safe.
