Fad Diets of Today
Hello everyone,
Many fad diets are floating around now that 2018 is in full swing. I came across an article written by a registered dietitian debunking a few of these fad diets.
The first fad diet the author highlights is the If It Fits Your Macros/Flexible Dieting diet. This involves a lot of calorie counting and making sure that your calories fit into a certain macronutrient distribution (50% carbohydrate, 25% fat, 25% protein). This is not an inherently bad way to track nutrition, but is not the only way. There are many intuitive eating methods that can be used to make sure an individual is maintaining proper nutrition and enjoying the eating experience. Also, this diet assumes a high level of math ability that every client may not have or feel comfortable with.
The second diet highlighted is the Whole30 diet. The Whole30 diet is very nutritionally limiting. However, that is not my main concern with it. My main concern are its dangerous and arbitrary rules. The rules comment about how the program is not as difficult as losing a parent or battling cancer. Also, you cannot for any reason slip up. If you feel pressured to eat poorly you need to learn to say no and toughen up. These rules are bullying tactics and psychologically damaging. The rules of the program make me angry and this is not a program I would ever recommend. This is the most amount of attention I will ever give Whole30 (which is more attention then it deserves)
The other two diets highlighted in the article are the alkaline diet and the blood type diet. While popular, these diets are not rooted in any science. They are not proven to be effective on their own or effective irrespective of other preventive health measures enacted at the same time.
