Choosing the better yogurt option
A recent article in Today's Dietitian highlighted the benefits and varieties of yogurt on the market. Yogurt is a fermented dairy product rich in calcium, potassium and protein. It may be difficult to determine the best selections so here are some tips.
My number one rule for choosing yogurt
Look at the nutrition facts label and look for the grams of protein to be higher then then grams of sugar.
My second rule for choosing yogurt
If the grams of protein is not higher then the grams of sugar, their values should be the same or almost the same.
Applying these rules while shopping
Let's compare some yogurts!
1. Siggi's Vanilla (5.3 oz):
15 grams of protein and 9 grams of sugar
There is more protein then sugar so this is an excellent choice
.
2. Chobani Greek Yogurt Blueberry on the Bottom (5.3 oz)
12 grams of protein and 15 grams of sugar
The grams of protein and grams of sugar are about the same so this is a good choice as well.
3. Oui Sea Salt and Caramel (3.5 oz)
3 grams of protein and 15 grams of sugar
There is much more sugar compared to protein in this yogurt so this yogurt is not the best choice to consume consistently. However, if it is something you are craving, then definitely grab it.
Recommendations on fat;
Yogurt products contain a wide range of fat percentages. Non-fat, 2% low fat, 4% whole milk, triple cream are just a few labels you may encounter. My advice for this is simple. Choose the one that best meets your individual needs though I recommend 2.5 grams of fat or less per serving.
Keep these tips in mind next time you are shopping the yogurt aisle.
Be well!
