How To Manage Hypoglycemia in Diabetes
Managing diabetes involves keeping blood sugar levels within a normal range. It is important to not let this number get too low. A blood sugar less than 70 mg/dl is too low and considered hypoglycemia. Let me share with you how to bring your blood sugar back up to normal.
To raise blood sugar to normal, follow the 3 steps listed below.
Step 1: Consume one food or drink listed below
3-4 glucose tablets
1/2 cup to 3/4 cup fruit juice or soft drink
3/4 cup soda
1 cup sports drink (gatorade)
1 tablespoon sugar or honey
Step 2: Wait 15 Minutes
Step 3: Re-check blood sugar
If your blood sugar is within a normal range, you have resolved your hypoglycemia.
If your blood sugar is still low, repeat steps 1-3 until blood sugar returns to normal.
Some tips:
1. Use a measuring cup to measure liquid. For example, pour gatorade to the the 1 cup line or soda to the 3/4 cup line.
2. Hypoglycemia is not the time to consume sources of protein, foods with fiber (like fruit), or diet beverages. These foods will not help raise your blood sugar.
Hypoglycemia may be challenging to manage. Following the steps listed in this post can help raise blood sugar levels back to normal.
Be well,
Mike
