Happy New Year!

I hope everyone had a safe and joyful new year surrounded by those you love. The buzz of the new year tends to intensify our desire to cultivate new passions and interests. 2019 may be the year you want to start a blog. Let me share 3 practical tips before you get started.

  1. Use a free blogging platform: I don’t think it’s worth it to pay for a platform when you are starting out.  Find a free platform such as Blogspot or Wordpress. You will be able to focus more on developing quality blog posts.

  2. Be authentic: Be yourself. People will read your blog, because they want to see your point of view shining through. However, it can be extremely difficult to find your voice. I’ve definitely struggled with this. It is easy to be fearful that your tone isn’t similar to the blogs you like to read. However, calm those fears. It’s perfectly fine for the tone of your blog to change as you find your voice. Be yourself and you can’t go wrong.

  3. Just start: Pick any topic you’d like to write about and just go for it. You will learn that most of your posts can be more succinct. You will learn how to take better photographs. You will learn what aspects of your blog bring you the most joy. You can’t learn this if you never start.

I started my first blog during my freshman year of college. I’ve had different versions of a blog on and off for many years. I’ve found what works best for me. Right now I like to share recipes, nutrition information, and culinary tips. I’ll keep doing that for as long as it brings me joy.

I hope you consider starting a blog. It’s a creative outlet that allows for total self-expression. I look forward to reading and learning from your blog when you choose to start one.

Cheers to blogs and creativity!
