The Perfect Time For Apple Crisp

The Perfect Time For Apple Crisp

There are certain foods and dishes we just have to eat at certain times of the year. For me that means watermelon and corn in the summer and comforting soups and stews to get me through the winter. There is nothing that screams quintessential New England in the fall then apples. Apples are the perfect fall treat. You can eat them plain for a snack or pile them sky high in an apple pie.

After purchasing way too many apples from a local orchard, my favorite way to use them is to bake an apple crisp. I'm a texture person so I love the warm and tender filling against the crispy and crunchy top. Pair it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and/or whipped cream and you have a perfect dessert to enjoy the comforting flavors of fall.

The apple crisp recipe I made yesterday came from the King Arthur Flour recipe you can see here: http://www.kingarthurflour.com/recipes/classic-apple-crisp-recipe

I was very pleased with the recipe although next time I would add the slightest amount more flour to the filling (about 1 tablespoon more). This would help the filling thicken up slightly. Also, I found that as the baking time was almost up, my crisp was not as brown as I'd like. To remedy this, I cranked the oven up to 375 and moved the baking dish to the top rack. This helped the crisp get the beautiful golden brown color we come to expect from our apple crisp.

With tender apples, a balanced filling, and (most importantly) a crispy top this was a fall dessert all your friends and family will enjoy.

Happy Baking!
